1. They are relaxing.

First and foremost, singing bowls (and sound baths more generally) are most often utilized to support guide the body and mind into a state of relaxation.


As Auster explains, sound baths can give a "deeply immersive, full-body listening experience that can bring balance, relaxation, and a sense of calm to your whole being." And as Schieffelin adds, you can feel the relaxing effects also with a short sound bathing session featuring this special instrument.


  

2. They actuate calm brain waves.

As per to both Auster and Schieffelin, there is a theory that singing bowls stimulate alpha and theta brain waves. "These waves are associated with deep, meditative and peaceful states that are highly favorable to healing," Auster notes, adding their sounds can even slow the heart and respiratory rate, which makes a therapeutic and restorative effect.



3. They may support reduce pain.

Auster notes that in a small 2016 study by integrative health research psychologist Tamara Goldsby, Ph.D., participants who attended singing bowl meditations and sound baths reported a decrease in pain following these ceremonies. However, more research is required .


 


4. They may support improve mental health.

In that same 2016 research, Goldsby and her team even observed that singing bowls reduced feelings of worry and anxiousness in the 62 men and women who participated.


 

5. They can increase overall well-being.

Lastly, Schieffelin notes singing bowls can give a renewed sense of well-being, happiness, and calm, and promote a sense of ease and inner peace.


If that seems too nice to be true, Goldsby's research did really find that participants' feelings of spiritual well-being improved significantly following the study. The researchers write, "Tibetan singing bowl meditation may be a feasible low-cost, low-technology intervention for decreasing feelings of tension, anxiety, and depression, and increasing spiritual well-being."
